I recently became aware of just how good ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’ by The Beach Boys is, for a number of reasons. Even John Piper loves it “because it’s so moral” so it must be great if it’s affirmed by one of my heroes.
It’s for that reason that I love it. Christians should treasure this song because it is becoming increasingly unique and meaningful to us.
Consider the lyrics:
Wouldn’t it be nice if we were older
Then we wouldn’t have to wait so long
And wouldn’t it be nice to live together
In the kind of world where we belong
You know its gonna make it that much better
When we can say goodnight and stay together
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could wake up
In the morning when the day is new
And after having spent the day together
Hold each other close the whole night through
Happy times together we’ve been spending
I wish that every kiss was never ending
Wouldn’t it be nice
These words perfectly encapsulate the joy and suspense of being engaged. Knowing that there is something so good to look forward to but wanting it to come so soon. It’s a unique feeling, something that feels so relevant to a generation that shows so little regard for the joy of delayed gratification.
It speaks of the greater story that marriage is meant to point to. The church is called to wait patiently like a bride until they are united forever with the one who has relentlessly pursued with their covenant love. Great stuff!
Also, it really helps that The Beach Boys are a great band!
